Designing a High-Speed, Low-Cost 3D Printer

Each year, MIE243 students are challenged with a fun, unique and engaging term-long project, which students build from start to finish. For the 2023 Fall Term, we have been challenged to create a high-speed, low-cost 3D printer for entry-level and hobbyist use.

Beginning with preliminary research, my team, assigned group number one and aptly named Best1Labs, gained a thorough understanding of how 3D printing works, from start to finish. Additional research about speed printing was also conducted, to assist in future design work.

With the research complete and project requirements thought out and established, our team began looking into specific components of the 3D printer, looking for new developments and ways to optimize the design. My areas of focus were on the frame design, Z-axis motion, and heating and cooling systems of the design. I made decisions directly affecting our design, such as the inclusion of dual-axis supports for the printing bed, the use of standardized parts over custom moulding/continuous framing options, and more.

My CAD work primarily focused on these parts, putting together the lower portion of the printer, the z-axis motion, and other supports, as required. I also completed the model assembly, putting together all the parts into one unified model. Although the use of standardized parts has been prioritized in our design to limit cost, I contributed some custom designs and models to help mesh and mount the frame and features.

My team contributions include general team organization and quality control. I optimized our file management system and regularly maintained any folders, files or research documents. I also ensured the quality and cohesion of our work, making sure that all formatting and quality standards were met for the final submission.

Our work was completed and submitted a week ahead of the due date thanks to effective teamwork, communication, and hard work. Our submission earned the top marks in the class, with a perfect 100% grade.

A drawing of a custom-designed part I created, using researched rotational bearing specifications and dimensions, as well as other frame parts. This part will be welded to the rest of the frame and will mount the support systems for the z-axis.
